Private aviation divides into four models, and the right choice depends far more on mission profile than on net worth.
On-demand charter is the entry point. You pay per flight hour (EUR 3,000-12,000 depending on aircraft category) with no capital commitment. It works for occasional users but offers no aircraft guarantee, the specific jet, crew, and interior you flew last time may not be available next time.
Jet cards and membership programmes (NetJets, Flexjet, VistaJet, Air Partner) offer guaranteed availability at fixed hourly rates with a capital deposit. This is the dominant model at 25-50 hours per year. The operator manages the fleet; the client manages nothing beyond booking.
Fractional ownership is a capital commitment: you own a share of a specific aircraft (typically one-sixteenth to one-half), with the operator managing crew, maintenance, scheduling, and eventual resale. It suits 50-200 hours per year and provides tax depreciation benefits in several jurisdictions.
Whole aircraft ownership involves acquiring a specific airframe, new from Gulfstream, Bombardier, Dassault, or Embraer, or pre-owned through a broker. The owner then engages an aircraft management company to provide crew, maintenance, hangarage, and operations. Annual operating costs for a Gulfstream G650 run approximately USD 3-4 million, excluding capital cost.
The Acquisition Process
Buying a pre-owned business jet is not like buying a car. An aircraft is a complex machine with maintenance cycles governed by flight hours, calendar time, and landing cycles. The pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is the single most important stage, a thorough PPI at a manufacturer-approved service centre can uncover USD 500,000 in deferred maintenance that the seller was hoping to pass on.
A credible acquisition broker will explain the maintenance programme status of every airframe they present (engine enrolments, APU status, upcoming heavy checks), provide comparative market analysis with recent sale prices for the same make and model year, and coordinate the legal structure, the aircraft will likely be owned by an SPV registered in the Isle of Man, Cayman Islands, or Delaware for liability and tax reasons.
Charter Quality Indicators
For charter clients, the aircraft operator’s safety audit status is non-negotiable. WYVERN Wingman, ARGUS Platinum, and IS-BAO Stage 3 are the industry standards. Any operator without at least one of these should be excluded from consideration. Beyond safety, the softer indicators: crew retention rates, interior condition, and the operator’s willingness to accommodate last-minute itinerary changes, separate the competent from the exceptional.
