Glossary
Key terms in the trophy-asset market, defined with the precision that professionals and their clients require.
- Trophy Asset
- A rare, high-value asset whose significance derives not only from its market price but from its scarcity, provenance, or status as a store of intergenerational wealth. Examples include super-prime real estate in global gateway cities, museum-quality fine art, superyachts over 50 metres, and historically significant collectibles.
- Off-Market Transaction
- A private sale conducted without public listing or advertising, typically through a network of agents, family offices, and legal intermediaries. Off-market transactions are common in the super-prime real estate, art, and yachting markets, where sellers value discretion and buyers access opportunities through relationships rather than portals.
- Family Office
- A private organisation established by a UHNW family to manage investments, tax planning, estate structuring, philanthropy, and lifestyle management. Single-family offices (SFOs) serve one family; multi-family offices (MFOs) serve several. Assets under management typically range from USD 100 million to several billion.
- UHNW / UHNWI
- Ultra-High-Net-Worth Individual: generally defined as a person with investable assets exceeding USD 30 million. The global UHNW population is estimated at approximately 400,000-600,000 individuals, concentrated in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
- SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle)
- A legal entity created for a specific, limited purpose, commonly used in trophy-asset transactions to hold real estate, yachts, or art collections. SPVs provide liability protection, tax efficiency, and anonymity. They are typically incorporated in jurisdictions such as the Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, Jersey, or Luxembourg.
- Lombard Lending
- A form of asset-backed lending in which a private bank extends credit against a portfolio of marketable securities, art, or other liquid assets. Lombard loans are common in private banking for UHNW clients who require liquidity without selling assets. Loan-to-value ratios typically range from 50-80% depending on asset class.
- Beneficial Owner
- The natural person who ultimately owns or controls an asset, even when the legal title is held through an SPV, trust, or nominee structure. Know-Your-Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money-Laundering (AML) regulations require financial institutions and advisers to identify the beneficial owner of any structure they engage with.
- Provenance
- The documented history of ownership, custody, and location of a work of art or collectible object. For significant works, provenance research is essential to establish authenticity, legal title, and freedom from restitution claims, particularly for works with gaps in ownership between 1933 and 1945.
- Flag State
- The country under whose laws a vessel is registered. Flag states issue the vessel's registration, enforce safety and environmental regulations, and provide the legal framework for ownership and mortgage recording. Common flag states for superyachts include the Cayman Islands, Marshall Islands, Malta, and the Isle of Man.
- Classification Society
- An organisation that establishes and maintains technical standards for the construction and operation of ships and offshore structures. For superyachts, classification by Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, or RINA is typically required for insurance and, for charter yachts over 12 passengers, for regulatory compliance.
- Due Diligence (Art Market)
- The investigative process undertaken before acquiring a significant work of art. Includes provenance research, authentication by the relevant catalogue raisonné author or expert committee, condition assessment by a specialist conservator, legal review of title and export restrictions, and insurance valuation.
- Golden Visa
- A residency-by-investment programme offered by several countries, granting residence rights in exchange for a qualifying investment, typically in real estate, government bonds, or a business. Relevant programmes for trophy-asset clients include Portugal (Golden Visa), Greece, Malta, and the UAE (Golden Visa for property investment above AED 2 million).
- CRS (Common Reporting Standard)
- An international standard for the automatic exchange of financial account information between tax authorities, developed by the OECD. CRS requires financial institutions in participating countries to report account information to their local tax authority, which then exchanges it with the account holder's country of tax residence.
- Trust
- A fiduciary arrangement in which a settlor transfers assets to a trustee, who holds and manages them for the benefit of one or more beneficiaries. Trusts are a cornerstone of intergenerational wealth planning, used for estate structuring, asset protection, and tax planning. Common trust jurisdictions include Jersey, Guernsey, the Cayman Islands, and Switzerland.
- STEP
- The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, the leading international professional body for advisers specialising in trusts, estates, and inheritance planning. STEP membership (TEP designation) is the most widely recognised credential for private client lawyers and trust professionals globally.
- DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre)
- A special economic zone in Dubai operating under a common-law framework with its own civil and commercial laws, courts, and financial regulator (DFSA). The DIFC is the dominant hub for wealth structuring, private banking, and family offices in the Middle East, combining English common law with tax neutrality.
- E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness)
- The framework Google uses to evaluate content quality, particularly for topics that can impact a person's health, financial stability, or safety, known as YMYL (Your Money or Your Life). For a professional directory, E-E-A-T means demonstrating the credentials, track record, and institutional affiliations of listed professionals, clear verification criteria, and transparent editorial standards.
- Catalogue Raisonné
- A comprehensive, scholarly listing of all known works by an artist. The catalogue raisonné is the definitive reference for authentication, a work not listed in the artist's catalogue raisonné is generally considered unmarketable at the upper tiers of the art market. Major catalogues raisonnés are published by specialist publishers and research institutes.
- KYC / AML
- Know Your Customer and Anti-Money Laundering: the regulatory framework requiring financial institutions, art market participants (increasingly), and professional advisers to verify client identity, understand the source of funds, and monitor transactions for suspicious activity. Non-compliance carries significant criminal and regulatory penalties.
- Fiduciary Duty
- A legal obligation of one party to act in the best interest of another. Professionals with fiduciary duties: lawyers, trustees, certain financial advisers, must place their client's interests ahead of their own, disclose conflicts of interest, and exercise a higher standard of care than in ordinary commercial relationships.
